You’ve got a pile of stuff that needs to go. In Sydney you have three real options: book your council’s free kerbside clean-up, hire a skip bin, or call a junk removal team. The right one depends on how much you have, how fast you need it gone, what’s in the pile, and whether you want to do the lifting yourself.
Short version:
- Council clean-up if it’s a couple of items, you can wait a few weeks, and nothing in the pile is building waste.
- Skip bin if you’re mid-renovation, filling it gradually over a week or more, and you have somewhere on your own property to put it.
- Junk removal if you want it gone today, don’t want to lift anything, or the pile has mixed items a council won’t take.
Here’s how each one actually works in Sydney in 2026.
Option 1: Council clean-up (free, but slow and limited)
Every Sydney council runs a bulky waste service. Most give you one or two booked collections a year; a few inner-city councils, like City of Sydney, run on-demand bookings with a roughly one-week turnaround. Outer councils often work on fixed dates, so if you miss the deadline you wait a fortnight or a month.
What they’ll take: furniture, mattresses (usually), whitegoods, small amounts of timber, bagged clothing, bikes, carpet rolled and tied.
What they won’t take: building and renovation waste, bricks, tiles, concrete, soil, asbestos, paint, chemicals, gas bottles, car parts, tyres, and in a growing number of councils, televisions and computers. Most cap you at about two cubic metres per collection. Put out more and it gets left, sometimes with a fine notice.
The catch nobody mentions: the pile sits on your nature strip for days. Scavengers pull it apart, it rains, and if a neighbour adds their junk to yours, it’s over the limit and gets skipped.
Best for: a single couch, an old fridge, a few boxes, when you have time.
Option 2: Skip bin hire (good for slow renovations, bad for one-off clear-outs)
A skip is a steel bin dropped on your driveway for a set hire period, usually 4 to 7 days. You fill it, they collect it.
Sydney skip prices in 2026 (published rates, varies by supplier and suburb):

Things that add cost or hassle:
- You do all the lifting. Every item over the side of the bin, often above head height.
- Underfill and you still pay full price. Overfill above the rim and they can refuse to collect, or charge extra.
- Restricted items. Mattresses, e-waste, tyres and paint usually attract surcharges or are banned from general skips.
- Council permit. If the skip goes on the street or footpath rather than your property, you need a permit from council, typically $80–$200 and a few days’ notice.
- Weight limits. Heavy waste (soil, concrete, tiles) has its own bin type at a higher price.
Best for: builders and renovators generating waste steadily over a week or two, with room on site for the bin.
Option 3: Junk removal (same day, no lifting, priced by what’s actually loaded)
A junk removal team turns up with a truck and two people, loads everything from wherever it is (garage, upstairs, backyard, under the house), sweeps up and leaves. You’re charged for the volume that goes on the truck, not for a bin you might not fill.
